If you are wondering what your next car would look like, it helps to understand if the body type actually suits your lifestyle. We continue our “Get to know your car body type” series by looking at the cabriolet.
For those tripping over the word (it’s pronounced as “kare-bree-yoh-lay”), you might want to stick to using convertible instead. The name, “cabriolet” harks back to the car’s French origins. Both cabriolet and convertible are now used interchangeably.
Cabriolet / Convertible
If the car has a foldable or removable roof, then it is a cabriolet or convertible. Typically, it comes with two doors, and two or four seats.
Most have motorised hard or soft tops that can extend or retract in a few seconds. The soft top of the iconic BMW Z4 Roadster, for example, opens and closes in 10 seconds, even during the ride up to a speed of 50 km/h.
If you think about it, the first cars were all convertibles. One benefit of driving a convertible is you avoid blindspots when you have the top down. It also offers unlimited headroom – great if you are really tall! But above all, driving a convertible is fun. There’s nothing like having the wind in your hair and the sun on your face (sunblock applicable in Singapore). Plus you will definitely attract a lot of admiring looks … for the car, at least.
Suitable for:
Fun-loving drivers who enjoy the thrill and freedom of an open-air driving experience. As most convertibles do not have a lot of storage space, it is mainly singles or young urban couples who are likely to covet it.
