So you have set your mind on getting a Sports Utility Vehicle (SUV) – or Sports Activity Vehicle (SAV) if you are looking at a BMW. Now as they say, the test is in the … well … testing.
There is no doubt that SUVs are taking large chunks out of the automotive pie everywhere. In many places, drivers are eschewing the classic sedan for a taste of these high-seaters.
While you might be enamoured by the many charms of an SUV, you would want to see if driving it is your cup of tea before committing to buying one. Here’s quick guide on what to look out for when you take an SUV for that test drive.
1. How to handle it
An SUV will feel very different from a sedan as it is bigger and has a higher centre of gravity.
You will need to test how to handle it. If you are an aggressive driver, you might experience some “rolling” in the opposite direction of a quick turn, or when going around sharp corners.
When test-driving the SUV, check the braking distance. As SUVs are heavier (especially if fully loaded), they do require more time and a longer distance to come to a complete stop.

2. What you can or cannot see
Many people like SUVs as the height gives them an elevated view of the road ahead. But check that you have visibility all around as well and be aware of larger blind spots. Some SUV designs and your own height might obscure your view of other vehicles which are lower.
Even if the vehicle is equipped with blind spot detection sensors, you do want to keep an active lookout nonetheless.
3. Park tight, park right
Size does matter when it comes to parking. Squeezing a bigger vehicle into a tight parking space will require a bit more skill or technology.
Most SUVs today offer front and rear parking sensors but if case you don’t have these driver assistance features, try parking into a small lot as part of your test drive.

4. Room to move and more
Besides taking the wheel, you want to try all the different seats in the SUV. Test how comfortable you feel. Is there enough leg and elbow room for all the passengers that you might be accommodating? Is it easy to get in and out of the vehicle, especially for the elderly?
5. What’s going in the boot
Finally, check how much space you have in the back. With SUVs, you get to fold down the second (and if there are third) row seats to get extra storage space. See if the seats fold flat as that would maximise the space. Also check the ease of loading or unloading.
